10 Steps to keeping your Focus on your Goals

27/12/2015

Focus is one main factor that makes a man achieve his dream. Without it, every goal that is set ends up theoretical. Each year, many goals actually end up not being achieved because the distance between goal setting and attainment is a bit wide. Some people never walk on the road towards their goals at all; they just set it and leave it where it was born, and then come back years later to make excuses why they couldn’t get to the finish line. I am not in anyway suggesting that it is so easy to achieve a goal, neither am I saying that it is so difficult not to. Anyone who has the drive and desire can make it to the end of their goals where they get the right results, but those who procrastinate or are lazy, may never ever reach their expectation as far as their goals are concerned.

Let me take you through, step by step, the way I achieve my goals. I decided to take you through this route because that is what I practically do. These steps have helped me write a number of books, and to keep going without giving up, in spite of the obstacles I always come across.

To keep your focus on your goal:

1. You must first determine what you want: Believe me; many people don’t know what they want. Whatever appeals to their eyes, they go for. Before going halfway down that goal, if they see someone else succeed in another area, they quickly abandon their current goal, and start afresh with their new appeal. With this kind of attitude, they can never be focused. Focus begins with conviction; having a made up mind on what you actually want to achieve. Your determination on what you want is what gives you direction.

2. You must choose your lane: Deciding what you want is great because it helps you determine your direction, but you must realise that a direction may contain many lanes; and you can’t run on all the lanes. Athletes run in the same direction but mostly on different lanes, otherwise, they’ll be disqualified. In the same vein, some people get themselves disqualified from their goals because they ran on the lane not meant for their goals.  To keep your focus, determine the lane that is suitable for your goal. If for instance, your goal is to become an Accountant, education is the right direction, but going to study Geography isn’t your lane.

3. Work on your strength/manage your weakness: When you work on your strength, you become better. Remember, I didn’t say, ‘strengthen your weakness’ because most weaknesses are not easy to strengthen. Where you can’t strengthen your weakness, you must learn to manage it. The strength of a footballer that is a striker may be on his left foot, but when the ball goes right, he may find it difficult to kick. The best way for this person to manage his weakness is to quickly put the ball in the position of his left leg before kicking. In all goal settings, it is better to maximise your strength so that you can achieve your expectation.

4. Choose your team: Even in a single person sport, there are teams; coach, manager, physiotherapist, etc. To focus on your goal, you need those who are in the same direction and lane. Most times, you can’t see alone and achieve alone. Those in your team may see farther than you, so let them instruct you. There is no true focus without good instructions.

5. Decide how far you want to go: The sky is the limit but how many people truly reach the sky? I am currently writing a book, and within my mind, I have decided how many pages it will be. I am doing all I can to fit my information into that number of pages; that is how far I want to go.

If your goal is infinite, you won’t achieve any goal. A goal must have a definitive end for it to make sense. If footballers are told to keep playing without knowing when the game will end, many, if not all, will walk out of the pitch after the normal time. A goal must have a beginning and an end for it to be meaningful.

6. Get moving: One issue that gets me frustrated with certain people is setting goals but never running with it. It is easy to identify those who run with their goals because you can see how much they’ve achieved after a period of time. If after some time, you’re still where you began, you aren’t actually running.

7. Deal with the days of deflation: Many times, I have asked myself why I do what I do. Many times, I have told myself that I am wasting my life trying to inspire people. Very many times, I have been discouraged not to continue in this direction, especially when I feel that life isn’t rewarding me as much as I am giving. These and many other reasons have justified my quest to give up, but despite these deflating moments, I have made up my mind to focus on my dream and purpose in life; to motivate people. Those who have deflated me most are those who know me most, but the more they deflate me, the more I pump myself up to keep going. As you focus on your goal, there will be many moments of deflation. Don’t start leaking when they attempt to deflate you; keep pumping yourself up, otherwise, you will lose focus.

8. Refuse distraction and attraction: In a previous article, I said that distraction and attraction have the same objective; to take your eyes off your goal. In a stadium, the opposing fans distract you, but your own fans attract you. When the opposing fans boo and jeer, they are distracting. If you listen to them, you will keep missing the point. On the other hand, you tend to entertain more when your fans are cheering you, but you aren’t there to entertain; you are there to score goals. Because of attraction, some teams lose their matches. Don’t miss your goal because of those on your side. Never play to the gallery; score the goals.

9. Fix your eyes on your destination: Let your attention be where the reward is. The reward is in winning. Keep your focus until you win.

10. Be absolutely dogged: Like Arsenal Football Club, it is good to play fanciful football, but it is only the dogged that wins the match. As you focus, there will be hard barriers coming against you. You need to be dogged. It is only the dogged that emerges. It is only the dogged that wins. It is only the dogged that comes out the champion. Be a champion. Be a winner. You can if you’re determined!

The Advantages of Mobile Marketing over TV Commercials

The Advantages of Mobile Marketing over TV Commercials
In the yore, traditional marketing was almost the only channel through which companies advertised their products or services. For many reasons, only the big organisations had access to this medium of showcasing their offerings. The small and medium scale enterprises couldn’t venture into television, radio or national newspapers because they didn’t have the wherewithal to do it. Today, the situation is a bit different, as the advent of the internet and mobile technologies have made things far easier. Even the big corporations have realised the accelerating importance of mobile communications technology and its pertinence in sending out brand messages to its potential targets. Mobile marketing has taken over from traditional marketing as the main aqueduct of product representation.

Mobile marketing has been generally defined as marketing on or with a mobile device such as smart phones or tablets. I must add that besides these two main mobile devices, other devices such as games machines and the new smart watches like Apple, Sony, or Samsung smart watches are included in mobile marketing. What makes mobile marketing dynamic is that day by day, new and more innovative mobile devices are being developed and brought into the marketplace. There is therefore, an increasing platform where mobile marketing can be developed and operated. These platforms with their diverse technologies give mobile marketing an edge over television commercials.

What other advantages does mobile marketing have over television commercials?

1.    It is cheap: The cost of promoting a product or service on a local television station is so expensive that small or medium scale organisations cannot afford it, let alone going on a national TV. Only big corporations venture into national television because they have huge advertising budgets due to their big profit margins. But in mobile marketing, even the smallest organisations can afford it because it is ridiculously cheap. For instance, some Facebook adverts can go for as low as $2; meanwhile, no TV commercial can be near that cheap.

2.   It has a bigger audience: The number of people who use mobile devices outweighs that of television users; the frequency of usage is also higher. In a home of four people for instance, there may just be one television device but four mobile phones; one per person. You can bet that these four people daily engage their phones more than they do with the television. This leaves you with four potential marketing targets with your brand message. Apart from that, these days, more people access their social media pages on mobile devices. So, billions of people who use the social media are easy reach for mobile marketing.

3.   Instant feedback: With mobile marketing, you get an instant feedback from customers or potential customers. You can also respond immediately to feedbacks or comments made about your offering in real time situation. For instance, if you place an advert on the social media, you can monitor the ad and respond instantaneously to any request, complaint, or comment, but on television commercial, you can’t do that because viewers don’t have the privilege to immediately comment on your brand or its message.

4.  You can monitor performance: In mobile marketing, you can monitor the performance of your ad through social media analytics, search engine analytics, or other forms of applications connected to the type of mobile marketing you are using. These analytics tell you how many people viewed your advert, the number that clicked the commercial, how long they engaged with the ad, etc. But in TV commercials, you do not have that opportunity. Having the opportunity to monitor your ad performance helps you to strategize; you’ll be able to tell if the advert is working or not. If it is, you’ll be able to know which bit of the ad is performing best so that you can increase your focus in that area. And if it isn’t working, you’ll research on how to make it work. All these happen because mobile marketing presents you with the statistics, unlike television advertising.

5.   It is flexible: On television advertising, only video content can be used, but on mobile marketing, all types of content can be posted. On mobile devices, you can post videos, audios, infographic, gifographics, product reviews, eBooks, cartoons, etc. All of these types of content can be adapted as marketing materials.

6.  It has a multi-device platform: Television adverts only come on one device, but mobile marketing comes on different devices, as earlier stated in this article. As people get more digital in behaviour, technological experts are seeing the need to make gadgets and devices smaller, and more internet-friendly. This drive increases the platform for mobile marketing.

7.   You don’t need to be an expert: To produce a good television commercial, you need a good producer to shoot and edit the commercial, but in mobile marketing, you don’t need to. These days, most internet video hits are recorded on mobile phones. Again, if you don’t want to use a video content, you can easily generate another type of content using free online templates. Most social media websites have ready made templates that you can use to promote your brand.

There are more reasons for preferring mobile marketing to television advertising especially for small and medium scale organisations. So, don’t wait for the millions or even thousands of dollars before sending your brand message to potential customers or clients. Take advantage of the new age marketing, and see how your business will soar!

7 Benefits of Using a Social Media Management Agency

7 Benefits of Using a Social Media Management Agency
Many a time, some organisations are at a loss why they need the services of a Social Media Management Agency. They feel that anyone can handle the responsibilities of having a social media presence, simply because they can post updates and respond to comments made. What many haven’t yet realised is that the social media is a marketplace. And for a marketplace, you must be careful what you say, how you say it, and when you say it. If you aren’t strategic in dealing with your social media content, you will get embarrassed on a platform that has become the world’s biggest media; far beyond the traditional media. Therefore, as it obtains in conventional marketing, a social media platform must take into cognizance all the evolutionary trends and dynamism of broad base marketing.

To handle an organisation’s social media platform, there is the need for a people who understand how the market works, how it spontaneously changes due to behaviours, events, happenings and uncertainties; and how to adapt immediately to these scenarios and respond effectively in order to enhance profitability while at the same time posing a positive perception.

A social media management agency will help your organisation to achieve the following:

1. Design a Social Media Strategy that is suited to your industry: if you run a plumbing company, it is useless having a social media strategy that is linked to healthcare. If you do that, you’ll be sending a wrong message. Many organisations, because of their ignorance of social media strategies, design plans that have no relationship with what they represent. To design the right tactics, you need those who understand how it works. Because the social media is dynamic, you need people that can think creatively, laterally, and out of the box.

2. Advice on effective Content Curation: I have often heard that content is everything; I strongly believe it. No matter how aggressive you are, and how much you spend in your social media marketing, if your content is worthless, you will end up irritating people. A worthless content is one that cannot engage people, especially its target audience. There is no specific rule for creating a valuable content. You just have to study the trend to know what your audience wants at any specific point in time. When you identify their need at any given time, take advantage of it. With that, your followership will grow. A Social Media Management Agency will help you identify a worthy content.

3. Consistency in updates: many organisations especially small and medium scale enterprises are inconsistent with their social media updates. Some only update their profiles a couple of times a month, and for others, it is less. Because of the cost of hiring a social media team, many of these organisations cannot compete with the huge firms within their industry. Using a social media agency is the best bet for small and medium scale organisations because it is cheaper. For the same reason of being cheap, some big organisations go for social media agencies rather than have their own team.

4. Maintaining a brand message: a social media management agency understands the voice of your brand because that is what you’ve communicated to her. She speaks with that voice boldly and continuously, without changing it. And in doing that, your audience and potential audience recognize you when you speak. But if employees are given the responsibility of managing an organisation’s social media platform, everyone may have his or her own version of what the brand message is. This obviously will lead to confusion.

5. Easy to control: a social media agency usually assigns an account manager to deal with the affairs of a specific client. The account manager becomes the contact person between the agency and the client. It is easy to discuss issues of concern and come up with workable solutions. In addition, the account manager, round the clock, manages the updates, feedbacks and responses on the platform.

6. Search Engine Optimisation or Ranking: many organisations, especially the small and medium scale enterprises don’t understand what search engine ranking is about. To explain briefly, search engine ranking is about search engines such as Google increasing your rating so that people can easily find your website when they search for it on their platform. For organisations with good social media presence, the ranking of their websites is higher because the more people click your link on the social media to access your site; the more Google rewards you with a good rating. To increase your ranking, more people need to visit your website. Where else can you find a huge crowd that can visit your site beyond the social media?

7. Social Media Analytics: the number and social grading of people who see your social media messages, like it, share it, click your link, etc are updated by various social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. It is called social media analytics. With social media analytics, you are able to study and use in decision making or re-strategising your social media policies. A good social media management agency helps you gain insight into social media analytics, and advises you on the best option to follow.

In conclusion, I would say that in spite of your intellectual arguments against the social media, the big organisations you look up to are already there. If they saw nothing good there, they wouldn’t be there. No large corporate organisation would waste its time and resources on platforms that generate no return on investment. The social media generates a huge return on investment. Why not design and adopt a social media policy and incorporate it into your overall organizational strategy, and see how far it will take you.

With the social media, there is massive brand recognition, improvement in brand loyalty and customer insight. There are also opportunities for the conversion of potential customers, enhanced perception and immediate communication. To top it all, it is far cheaper than traditional marketing.
